Caring for Tom

Over the summer we volunteered to care for the guinea pig of another expat family that was in America. Jessica was ecstatic because she's been dying to have a pet. Tom, the guinea pig, was a classroom pet in her class the previous year and she was happy to have a pet, even if it was temporary.

We did a little research on the internet to learn what guinea pigs eat and what care needs they have. Then we set up a feeding system, so the kids could learn about the responsibilities of caring for a pet.

The kids also helped with cleaning his cage. You can see the difference in his cage after the first cleaning when we got him.

Tom is back with his owners now and it was a fun for the kids to have a pet for awhile. Even though they did a pretty good job of caring for the guinea pig, I don't think we're (read I'm) ready for a family pet!

Fun fun fun! Maybe you should adopt a hamster!
