Vysehrad

Another adventure in Prague: Vysehrad means "High Castle" and parts of this fortress date back to the eleventh century. I'm pretty sure this is not one of the old portions of the fortress, so we weren't too concerned about the kids climbing on it! Seriously, they climb on everything!

This is one of the entrances to the fortress.

This lone tower had the date of 1100 on it!

This is the church of St. Peter and Pavel. It was rebuilt in the 1880s in a neo-Gothic style.

One of the front doors of the church, very exquisite! The inside is also supposed to be beautiful. We'll check it out when some of you come for a visit!

On the grounds of the fortress are several statues that were once on Palackeho Most, one of the city bridges. This statue is of two mythical Czech warriors.

Outside of the church is the Vysehradsky hrbitov (cemetary), a prestigious resting place reserved for the artists and intellectuals who played a part in the foundation of the nation. I only recognize 1 of the occupants but true musicians will recognize 2. Also buried here is the man who coined one of the two Czech words that have entered the English language "robot"! We didn't find his grave site, but I thought this was a fun bit of history to share. By the way the other word is "pistol". I did find a few others grave sites that are picture worthy.

This statue has a very close resemblance to the Christus in the Temple Square Visitor Center!

This monument is a beautiful mosaic.

Beautifully painted archway.

This is photo is of a water well on the fortress grounds; pictured are Jess, Cam and Vinson & Val Reeves.

A better view of Prague with the castle and bridges.

A little playground at the fortress, designed to look like a fortress!
